RECESSION IN MEXICO (Opinion Page) |
Just returned from the Baja on Sunday Morning, 7/19/09. We made a long weekend of it after arriving on Thursday Late. Last year was a slow year for drive in tourism for Ensenada and Punta Banda. With gasoline peaking over $4.00 per gallon, people in Southern California curbed their driving considerably. What was not common knowledge until November was that we were in a recession. The recession part has not changed. Camp grounds that are normally packed this time of year were scarcely populated. In addition, the Punta Banda Beach Houses were a near ghost town as well. With unemployment at near 12% in Southern California and near that nationally, people are just not spending money. We visited with a few of our guests and these lucky people had the beach pretty much to themselves. If you can afford to go, you should. Houses right on the beach, no crowds in local restaurants, and the peso at 13 to $1.00. Everything you will buy, if you pay in pesos, will be 30% off. There are houses still available for August.
